About tradition?

The Sundance that we are about to live is undoubtedly connected to the Lakota people and to the white buffalo calf woman. Howard’s long experience as well as the depth of his medicine men lineage are signs of undeniable authenticity.

Let me give you a few precise statements about the tradition and the vision that is ours so that there is no misunderstanding once the dance starts…..

In case you come from other clans or families, in case you have learnt how to dance with other medicine men or women, be ready for a few changes. In case you already have prayed or danced with Howard, or with the wolf clan, do be ready for some changes as well! Let me give you a very simple example, from the Red Valley Sundance. Traditionally or rather, according to the usual practise, it is the men who carry the sacred tree to the dance circle. A few years ago, Howard told us that the tree was a woman and that the women should carry it this time. It was quite unusual! It was about the inspiration of that very moment and we all thought that it was right. The next year, men and women together carried the tree.

What is the most important here is that what we do in a sundance for peace be respected.

One specific point about our dance is the matter of the woman on her moon time. We do not beleive that the spirits do not come when a woman has her period, or that something bad could happen or interfere. Women in their moon time are welcome to dance, sweat, carry or bring the canunpa, attend a healing process and everything goes well.

This does not mean that others behaving differently are wrong. It means that this is the way we.

It is the same regarding singing and druming. Women are welcome to sit at the drum and play along. There's one condition, and it the same for men and women. To sit at the drum during the danse, you'll have to master the off beat !

For me going along the way aside with this genuinely humane being is quite an adventure of wisdom. May we all learn from His wisdom, and laugh, and sing and dance as near as possible to the Spirit on Earth, in peace, in joyous peace !
